We’re here at the Bay Area Maker Faire, about 3/4 of the way through the day. It has been GREAT to see all of you who have stopped by so far. Franky was on the Autodesk “Future of 3D Printing” panel, which had some really good questions and answers about future 3D materials, current experimentation with materials, and where the industry is headed.

If you’ve gone by our booth, you may notice that we didn’t quite have all of our promised demos. Unfortunately, we had some delays in getting our items here on time (due a variety of factors beyond our control). We do still have material samples, though, and we’ll continue to be at the booth the rest of the evening and all day Sunday. (We’re working on getting our display pieces before Sunday morning and will update you if we will have additional items in the booth tomorrow.)

In addition, we are still doing our meet-up tonight at The Swingin’ Door here in San Mateo. So if you’re in the area, join us from 8-10 pm for a closer look at some of our samples, share what you’re working on, and ask us your 3D printing questions. We hope to see you there!

Now that Defense Distributed is on the defensive, it’s time to think a bit harder about what 3D printing really means. To that end, Michigan Tech is sponsoring a Printers For Peace contest that is encouraging designers and engineers to make amazing stuff using a 3D printer that can change the world for the better. “Unfortunately, the only thing many people know about 3D printing is that it can be used to make guns,” writes Dr. Joshua Pearce, founder of the project.

“This is an open-ended contest, but if you’d like some ideas, ask yourself what Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King, or Gandhi would make if they’d had access to 3D printing.”

The deadline for the contest is September 1st and they’ll announce winners on the 4th. They are looking for designers to build things that will help, not harm, people.

low-cost medical devices
tools to help pull people out of poverty
designs that can reduce racial conflict
objects to improve energy efficiency or renewable energy sources to reduce wars over oil
tools that would reduce military conflict and spending while making us all safer and more secure
things that boost sustainable economic development (e.g. designs for appropriate technology in the developing world to reduce scarcity)

The winner of best project will win a Type A Machines Series 1 3D Printer and the runner-up gets a simpler RepRap Prusa Mendel 3D printing kit.

With all the press attention on 3D printing is the gateway to firearms anarchy, it’s refreshing to see someone take a different path. By backing 3D printing engineers into a corner, DefDist and the government are simply using fear to achieve competing goals. The results will be both needlessly draconian legislation and a variant of the Streisand Effect that will spread these arguably faulty plans far and wide. When the government outlawed DVD decryption code you could buy a T-shirt with the code printed on it. The same will happen in this case, although this code, when run, could take off fingers and give legislators more ammunition for a full crackdown on home 3D printing.

Let us know if you enter and good luck. We need more weapons against poverty and fewer weapons against each other.

This Article Originally was Published here: http://www.energyandcapital.com/articles/utica-shale-boom-or-bust/3390

“The whole thing is a bust. We might as well give up.”

That’s what a friend of mine told me earlier today, during a phone call on my way in to work. I have a feeling it won’t be the last time I hear this sentiment…

My friend was referring to a recent report released by Ohio’s Department of Natural Resources. The annual report shows statistics for drilling, permitting, and production.

This year’s report was highly anticipated because it reveals the activity in the Utica Shale for the year.

And this particular report is significant due to the frequency with which the department publishes these reports. North Dakota, for example, allows us access to drilling and production statistics on a monthly basis. In Pennsylvania, it’s every six months. But Ohio only does this analysis just once a year — and last year’s report only included results from a handful of Utica wells.

Some are calling the report a flop for the Utica; others, a major disappointment. One even called it “hope-shattering” for oil investors.

But they’re all dead-wrong.

Personally, I see the report as a definitive sign that we’re headed straight for a natural gas-fueled future.

I’ll tell you more about that in a moment.

Behind the Utica Curtain

So, what’s behind the skeptical outlook for the Utica?

Well, when the report was released, it showed the Utica Shale produced 636,896 barrels of oil. That averages out to a trivial 1,745 barrel per day — far from what we consider an oil boom.

But don’t be too quick to make comparisons to North Dakota. The two plays are at opposite ends of the development stage…

The nearly 800,000 barrels of oil being pumped out of the Peace Garden State are a culmination of years of drilling. Companies in North Dakota, on the other hand, have been drilling into the Bakken for the better part of a decade.

But one look at a chart showing Ohio’s crude oil production doesn’t inspire much confidence, does it?

Is this as “hope-shattering” as some have described?

The report’s production figures were from just 87 wells drilled during 2012 — only 65 of which were commercial producing wells. According to them, the rest were tested and shut-in, or dry and abandoned.

Furthermore, we have to remember that only three of the commercial wells were in production for more than 300 days. Compare that to the Bakken, which has over 8,500 producing oil wells.

In other words, it’s way too early to call.

As I put it to one of my readers in an email this morning: “Those 87 Utica wells make up a microscopic share of the state’s 50,000-plus wells… and despite that fact, the Utica STILL accounted for 13.4% of Ohio’s total crude oil production, and 16% of total gas production.”

The truth is Utica wells made up less than one-half of one percent of Ohio’s oil wells in 2012. Within a few short years, it’s projected to account for nearly three-quarters of the total.

Still, the crude oil portion of the report isn’t what has me bullish over the Utica’s potential role in future U.S. energy production.

For that, we have to turn to natural gas…

3D Printing: America’s Next Manufacturing Revolution Has Begun

Wired Magazine says this new printing technology could trigger: “The Next Industrial Revolution.”

The Atlantic Council reports the United States, the current leader in 3D technology, could experience a renaissance in innovation, design, IP exports, and manufacturing…

The bottom line: America is BACK!

Click here to find out how early investors could turn a mere $10,000 into over $3.7 million from the three explosive American companies at the forefront of this incredible 3D technology.

Our Natural Gas-Fueled Future

The report also hinted at something else: The Utica play might be more “gassy” than originally believed.

If you recall, one of the reasons Marcellus drillers in Pennsylvania were moving westward into the Utica was that they believed the formation was more liquids-rich (think of a play similar to the Eagle Ford).

Along with the 636,986 barrels of oil, activity in the Utica Shale also produced 12.8 billion cubic feet of natural gas.

What’s the benefit of the Utica being more “gassy”?

To put it simply, that’s where the United States will turn for its next cheap source of energy.

Our natural gas demand has been unwavering, even after the massive economic meltdown in the summer of 2008.

I haven’t found anyone who disagrees that natural gas will play a critical role in U.S. energy consumption over the next several decades.

And the payout for long-term investors in these shale gas plays will be extraordinary.

You’ve no doubt noticed by now that U.S. natural gas production has been on the rise over the last few years, but what you may not have realized is that conventional and coalbed methane production is actually declining…

By year-end, natural gas prices at the Henry Hub will top $5/MMBtu.

The slowdown in drilling activity as companies shifted their focus to oil will inevitably take a toll on production. We certainly won’t see a spike like we did in 2008, when natural gas prices shot into double-digits…

But here’s the important thing to recognize: It doesn’t have to spike.

In fact, savvy gas investors don’t need prices to rise at all!

Until next time,

Ever wondered what audio sounds like on an iPhone 4 video taken from a dirt bike driving 100 miles an hour? The answer: not so great. It sounds less like thrilling dirt bike ride and more like a bunch of wind. So Mark Shorey set out to make a better dead cat. No, not an actual dead cat: that’s film production jargon for wind screens that use synthetic fur to cut out ambient noise. Shorey’s company DeadCatDot was told the unique shapes of their products were too hard to make with traditional methods, so 3D printing was the answer they needed. The company prototyped two types of dead cats using their MakerBot Replicator 2, along with several devices for keeping videos stable, and saved “tens of thousands of dollars” along the way, according to Shorey. They’re also purchasing a second Replicator 2 for production overseas. You can hear the impressive results on the DeadCatDot site.
